Yes, You heard it right. I got my job within just 2 months of starting out.

Disclaimer : I am from Fashion Design background and started practicing UI UX Design from Aug,2020. This post is a personal experience that I am sharing with you all. If any newbie benefits even one percent from this story, my work will be done :) I am sharing what all worked for me. Industry experts, if you are reading this story, Correct me if I am wrong anywhere.

Lets go to how it all started:

It was in February 2020, that I was doing my internship in Fashion Designing, clueless of what life had planned for me. In March end, the pandemic hit ,the world and all our dreams were shattered along with it. Rushed back to home, and did not knew what to do next, we can’t do WORK FROM HOME in Fashion Industry.

Just then, my brother suggested why don’t you go for UI UX Designing, It is a booming career and you will enjoy it. At first, I was resistant to it, But later thought why not give it a try. Since, I started with it, there has been no turning back, I enjoyed it so thoroughly and knew that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. And it will not be wrong to state that:

“It was the best decision of my life.”

How I started learning ?

Online Courses

There is so much of content about UI UX Design online, that I was overwhelmed where to start from .Online courses have been to my rescue for getting the fundamentals clear.

The first course I did was Daniel Scott’s User Experience Design Essentials — Adobe XD UI UX Design. It helped me get a lot of my basics cleared about, especially I got a hang of Adobe XD after completion of this course. Make sure that you complete the projects included in the course. I would totally recommend any beginner to start with it, it really makes you understand the basics step by step.

After this one, I enrolled in Coursera’s Calarts UI UX Design specialization, I completed two of its courses. Here again, you got to make sure to complete your assignments with all your heart and don’t just strive for getting the certificate, rather grasp the concepts taught in it.

Simultaneously, I did Uxcel’s Fundamentals Courses and Internshala’s UI/UX Design training. Out of all the courses I did, Uxcel one was my favorite, like the best learning experience ever. It encouraged my competitive spirit to work hard and to go to the top of the list. If you have never visited it, go right now!!!! Okay, first complete reading this article.😂

Coming to, Internshala UI/UX design training, it got me started with figma, I honestly did not face any problems using Figma because I feel it is very similar to Adobe XD, just little differences here and there, which makes it better 😜Team Figma yay !! Overall It was a good learning experience, Mind me only if you complete all the practical activities, then only you can learn. So that was it with all the Courses I did.

Social Media

Now lets talk about how Social media helped me. First things first, make LinkedIn your best friend and start scrolling LinkedIn feed how you scroll your Instagram feed. Make connections, interact with people, ask for guidance and attend online webinars and Live videos on YouTube. This is all for free!!

Join UI UX Communities

Join WhatsApp, Telegram or Slack Communities of UI UX Designers, whatever suits you. People are so genuine in this field that they will help you, guide you and solve your problems, most of the time. Join the right group and share your designs, ask for feedback and any problems if you are getting so.

I have never seen a community which is so genuine, helpful and accepting.

I have personally improved a lot on my designs with just people critiquing my design, I know it might feel discouraging and offensive sometimes, But we have to use it in a constructive way, improve upon it and ask for feedback again! This is an amazing way of improving.

Make Projects

Create Projects, Publish them, Ask for feedback.

Make as many projects as you can, If you are doing a course, and it includes a small project, go for it and try to make it on a larger scale. Like add some things from your own side and other learnings, that way you will really stand out.

I made my first ever project as part of Coursera’s specialization , and it was the project that landed me a job. (Click here to see my project)

After completing the course, I further tried to polish my project and assembled all my learnings and design process into a project and published it on Behance. Honestly, I was really very nervous when publishing it, but getting positive reviews on it is what boosted my confidence.

Share your work and ask for feedback

Last but not the least, Don’t be afraid to share. Share your Case Studies and projects on LinkedIn, Dribble ,Behance or any other platform if you wish to.I can not lay enough emphasis on the fact that how much important it is to share your work on LinkedIn. I got my job through LinkedIn, potential employers are always on a search to find the best candidate, and you never know who might see your work and be interested in hiring you.

So share your work, ask for feedback and keep learning.. Don’t Stop and you may succeed very soon!

Happy Learning folks!
